Tom Macklin is a longtime resident and former mayor of the city of Avon Park. He rose to national prominence after an attempt to get fellow city council members to enact the "Illegal Immigration Relief Act." That measure would have penalized landlords who knowingly rented to illegal aliens, businesses who knowingly employed illegal aliens and would have made English the official language for municipal business in the city.

The measure was voted down on its second reading by a 3-2 vote following much pressure from outside influences.

Nevertheless, Macklin's many appearances on national radio and television talk shows earned him a spot as a Lt. Governor candidate on the Reform Party gubernatorial ticket with Max Linn running for Governor. It was during that campaign and his travels through the Sunshine State that Macklin heard tremendous voter discontent with the two major parties and he decided to establish the American Party of Florida.

Macklin remains active in local government as well as working to establish executive committees throughout Florida.
